IGBO CULTURE: THE IMPORTANCE OF STORYTELLING

Stories play a crucial role in Igbo culture. Moonlight tales, known as Egwu Onwa, are special community gatherings where people come together to share stories and music. These tales serve as a means to preserve Igbo culture, history, and traditions. Proverbs, known as inu or ilu, are also significant in Igbo culture. Chinelo Anyadiegwu was raised by her grandfather and mother with these proverbs, some of which she still finds challenging to fully grasp. One such proverb she shares is, "A new chicken moves with one leg," which advises caution in unfamiliar situations. The wisdom passed down by her elders required effort to comprehend, making it a rewarding experience. Many Igbos are talented writers, storytellers, and musicians. In Igboland, stories are often accompanied by music, rhymes, and audience participation. The stories I share will include both familiar tales and those unique to specific families or villages. Igbo storytellers incorporate common characters, themes, and sometimes songs into their narratives. The key differentiator is the storyteller's skill, whether through voice modulation, music, or unexpected plot twists. Peers entertain each other with stories, while elders pass down wisdom through their own experiences. Through this blog, I aim to share the stories I've read and the lessons I've learned to educate my children and entertain both them and you, dear readers. The insights into Igbo culture are drawn from the book "Introduction to Igbo Mythology for Kids." If you wish to support this endeavor, consider purchasing a copy of the first book in the publishing project. Your contribution will help fund emerging illustrators and establish a center for fostering connections through shared reading experiences.
