Coviello (French: Covielle) is a minor character in the Commedia dell'arte. He falls into the category of the Zanni. His name is a double diminutive of the name Giacomo (Jacob or James). In English, he might be called Jimmy or Jackie. The character dates back to at least the 16th century. He was typically from the southern part of Italy, and could apparently dance and play the mandolin quite well. His mask usually portrays him with a ridiculously long beak-like nose, often ne
This blog post was written by Thistles & Dandelions volunteer Alessia Bruni after a workshop with the curator at David Livingstone Birthplace Museum. While discovering David Livingstone and Kate Simpson’s research, Alessia also took the opportunity to learn about another T&D volunteer, Lara Lasisi’s experience interning at the museum. One upon a time, on a cold stormy day, two white merlons were flying away. They were looking for a nest to warm up in any way. In a chimney, they found a home and take refuge from that storm. But the fireplace was lit and the smoke makes them all black. From that day, they remained black forever.
After a trip to Port Glasgow, on February 8, 2020, I read with Chikaima Maitea this story about an eagle and a smart, wee Wren. I hope you can enjoy like us it! This is a tale from the Western isles, the beautiful Hebridean Islands that lie off the coast of Scotland in the waters of the Atlantic and whose next-door neighbour to the west is America. A mighty eagle and a little wren began to talk one day. “I am the greatest bird of the skies,” the mighty eagle boasted, “and all

His name is Farinella. He's from Putigliano, Apulia. He saved his town by Saracen's raid, persuading his fellows to fake a lockdown due to the plague. Farinella led the fake lockdown and at least Saracens went away without bringing anything from Putigliano's citizens. Putignano is a lovely town in Puglia south of Bari. It is one of the oldest carnivals in Europe and one of the most important in Southern Italy. All the floats carry political or satirical messages and although
On the date 02/02/2020, the United Kingdom had left Bruxelles by 3 days on the note of Scottish music, even if Scotland is clearly against Brexit. Another time England and Scotland are enemies. Once upon a time, Sir Walter Scott told us that the rivalry between these two countries was overcome through the Love and the cunning of a wee lassie. (From Sir Walter Scott’s Minstrelsy of the Scottish Borders) This is a story from the Scottish Borders. These were once known as the “
